People First of Toledo
Mission
In 1998, a group of self-advocates began People First in Ohio because wanted to improve their abilities to represent themselves and to train others to be self-advocates. Members are teenagers and adults. There are many chapters throughout Ohio, including a statewide organization.
The aim of members of People First is to learn to be self-advocates. Members are encouraged to let people know what they need so that others can help them fulfill their goals. People First members also recognize that they have a responsibility to give back to the community, to contribute all that they can.
People First of Toledo holds meetings on the third Thursday of the month at The Ability Center, 5605 Monroe Street, Sylvania, Ohio from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Local Chapter Members work for better transportation, curb cuts, parks with adaptive equipment, and making buildings accessible. Members also do service projects, volunteer in the community, and discuss disability issues in local schools.
